Chafic Abboud

Chafic Abboud’s responsiveness to materiality is reflected in the range of media he worked in, from oils and watercolours to ceramics, terracotta and artist books. A major figure in Lebanon’s modern art movement, Abboud was interested in figurative painting before moving towards abstraction in the late 1940s. He attended the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Cesar Gemayal, a pupil of the acclaimed Lebanese artist Khalil Saleeby, then moved to Paris in 1947 to work in the ateliers of André Lhote and Fernand Léger. Abboud received a scholarship from the Lebanese government to attend the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1952, studying drawing and engraving. While living in Paris, Abboud participated in the first Paris Biennial in 1959 and FIAC in 1983. In 2011, the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris hosted a major retrospective while another was initiated a year later at the Beirut Art Centre.
