Mona Hatoum

With an oeuvre spanning four decades, Mona Hatoum is one of today’s most established contemporary artists. Through installation, video, photography, sculpture and works on paper, Hatoum traverses subjects ranging from global politics to the human body. Her highly conceptual and succinctly designed works often toy with a viewer’s sense of familiarity and comfort. She expresses her acute awareness of human interaction by controlling the ways in which her objects are encountered. Key works include pieces where she has turned everyday items such as chairs, swings, cribs, hammocks and kitchen utensils into artistic objects that invoke intimidation and personal risk through a manipulation of scale, tactility and composition. Hatoum studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art, London from 1975 to 1979, and the Slade School of Art, London from 1979 to 1981. Solo exhibitions include the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1994 and 2015, Doha’s Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in 2014, Tate Britain in London in 2000 and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, 1997.
