Abdallah Benanteur

One of Algeria’s leading painters, Benanteur’s shimmering abstract landscapes emerge from his observations, reminiscences and imaginings of the world around him. Benanteur is both a painter and an engraver and has produced over 1300 artist books. Through subtle gestures in colour, form and texture, he infuses his work with his interest in the history painting, particularly landscape and abstraction. The architecture of cities as well as natural landscapes appear in his paintings, steeped in the varying tones and angles of the sunlight. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Oran in 1948, Benanteur moved to Paris in 1953 to begin his career as a painter. In the 1970s, he became a professor at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He has exhibited his work internationally, including retrospectives at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris in 1970.
