Fateh Al Moudarres

Fateh Moudarres is considered a pivotal artist of Syria’s modern and surrealist movements. Spending his childhood in the countryside of Aleppo informed the colours and textures in his paintings. A student of the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome from 1954 to 1960, Moudarres’ studies took him to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the early 1970s. Upon his return to Syria, his work incorporated references to Christian and Muslim symbolism, as well as to Assyrian antiquity. He later adopted a more expressionist style, all the while maintaining his signature square-shaped figures. Moudarres’ work became more politically themed in the aftermath of the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. He is also recognised for poetry, short stories and essays, produced in the 1950s when modernist discourse encouraged collaborations between writers and artists. Moudarres participated in numerous exhibitions including the 7th São Paulo Biennial in 1963, the Venice Biennale in 1961 and a major retrospective at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris in 1995.
