Hussein Madi

In his reputable and versatile art career, Hussein Madi has mastered multiple media, working in sculpture, painting and the graphic arts. He has been critically lauded for his productivity and genius in the blend of colour, material, form and message. This untitled abstract acrylic painting from the 1960s shows the blended use of figural gesture and symbolism into abstract forms. After graduation from the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts in Beirut in 1962, Madi worked as a graphic designer and illustrator of political caricatures for newspapers in Baghdad. In 1963, he continued his art studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. Upon his return to Lebanon he exhibited at various shows in Beirut as well as at the Alexandria Biennial in Egypt throughout the 1960s. Between 1972 and 1987, he split his residence between Rome and Beirut where he periodically taught art at the National Art Institute of the Lebanese University. In testament to his esteem as an artist, his works have shown at the British Museum, the Venice Biennale, and Tokyo’s Ueno Museum.
